The Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education program (NIE) offers free resources to students and parents to help learning continue over the summer. During the summer break, students and teachers in the following counties have access to the digital edition of the Tampa Bay Times: Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota. Students love computers, and now they can learn with the Tampa Bay Times, just as it appears in the printed edition, from the convenience of their computer in school and at home. Sure, our summer reading program is fun for kids, but here is the best reason to participate: Research has shown that student performance on standardized tests is improved by using the newspaper as a reading resource and that the combined use of the newspaper in school and at home brings an even greater increase in test scores. We know that children learn best when parents are interested and involved in their education.
Many parents have found that using the newspaper is an easy, enjoyable way to read, talk and think together with their children. Seeing a parent read the newspaper every day motivates a child to want to do the same – read and learn.
